Ryan, OK to Ray G. and Florene Stewart Evans. He passed away at the
young age of 69 on March 2, 2005 in Nocona General Hospital. He was

Rice.
He is survived by one daughter, Sarah Evans Barger,
son-in-law Tony Barger of Nocona, TX, and two grandson, Wesley and Colby
Ray Barger, all of Nocona, TX; two sons, Wes Bennett and Shane Bennett
of Joplin, MO; one sister, Helen Sue Yarbrough of Nocona; one aunt, Lola
Rice of Dallas, and an unlimited number of nieces and nephews.
Max graduated from Prairie Valley in 1953 and soon
after joined the National Guard where he went on active duty for a year
and there attended two radio schools. After that he returned to Texas
and went to college at Midwestern State University majoring in music.
While working at music stores (Norsworthy then McCarty’s) and going to
college was involved in starting a band called Rick and the Keens, where
he started by singing back up vocals, and soon after learned to play the
bass on the band stand. Rick and the Keens were a great success! It was
1961 and their style was early rock and roll. They had a major hit with
Mercury Records, and they took a little son called Peanuts to #1 in New
York, LA and Chicago. It then stayed in the top 100 of the Nation for 16
weeks.
Then in 1966 he was eager to hit the road and be a salesman. He worked
for a handful of music companies from Standell Amplifiers to Chicago
Music Industries, Norlin and Gibson Guitar. He was awarded salesman of
the year for 5 out of 11 years with Gibson. Max had a lead in this
industry because he knew his equipment, by selling it and by being a
musician himself. He not only sold to the top names in the business, but
also played with them on may occasions and was known as the “Commercial
Bassist.” And through these years, travels and companies, he made may
friends that until his death were very dear to him and him to them as
well.
He returned to Texas in 1981 and since had never moved away. He was very
active in the community, if there was music, Max was involved. If you
ever had the experience of seeing him play, or being on the band stand
with him, you knew how much he truly enjoyed it!
He was also involved in the starting of a recycling
center in Lewisville that to this day is still going strong. He had done
maintenance at the Nocona Housing Authorities and his final job was
driving a TAPS bus until he was too sick to work any longer.
Max was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was there
nearly every Sunday until just a couple of months ago. He was a good
Christian man and his actions proved his words to be true. He loved
cars, music and his family.
Max Ray Evans was a wonderful father, true friend,
cheerful volunteer, great listener and he would eagerly share his
knowledge with anyone that was interested. He was a wonderful man and
will be missed by all that knew him.
