Gilbert Earl Richardson...
Gilbert Earl Richardson, 95, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2006 in Bowie, Texas.
Funeral Services were at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Montague with Bennie Slack and Vernon Shaw officiating under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home. Burial followed at Montague Cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Montague Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 13, Montague, Texas 76251.
Earl was born April 26, 1911 in the Mallard Community of Montague, Texas to John S. and Maulcey (Couch) Richardson, the third of seven children. He attended classes at Mount Tabor School in the small community until the age of 14, when he left school to work and help support his mother and siblings after his father's death. He worked six days a week and rode in the back of a horse drawn wagon with his family to church every Sunday.
He learned to operate grain thrashers and repair machinery and automobiles. He spent long hours at the garage as a mechanic and then as a driver of a tank truck hauling gasoline until he decided to move back to the farm where he stayed until 1941. He then purchased a building across from the Montague County Courthouse and went into business serving the community with gas and automobile repair.
In 1955, Earl dug a water well and "sort of by accident" started his own water company to serve the local community. Eight years later, he would install a second water company in Sunset, Texas.
In the late 1950's, Earl's father-in-law's house caught fire. There was no fire truck in Montague. The fire department in near-by Nocona responded but by the time it reached the site the house was completely destroyed. It was then he decided to collect enough donations to purchase a water truck for the community. A tank truck was purchased and Earl converted it into a fire truck. That was the beginning of the Montague Volunteer Fire Department, an organization he has served as the fire chief for forty-eight years.
Earl married Edith Allen on November 7, 1975 in Nocona, Texas. He taught an adult Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church of Montague and sang in the choir. He enjoyed wood working and creating sewing boxes from old wooden Coke and Dr. Pepper cases. Every year he would plant a large vegetable garden and give the produce to family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; six siblings; previous wife, Wanda Ruth Richardson.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Richardson of Montague; four children, Betty Earlene Saunders of Bowie, Pearlene Eldred and husband, Bobby of Nocona, Gayle Harris and husband, Ron of Terrel, and Gwynna Six and husband, Jay of Arlington; two sisters, Jewel Miles of Fort Worth and Catherine Mitchell of San Antonio; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; four step children; fifteen step grandchildren; nineteen step great-grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were Eddie Fenoglio, Tommy Fenoglio, Royce Corado, Lynn Nobile, Jerry Bonham, Dean Spearling.
